Food Allergies

Food Allergies

The Food Allergy Research & Education reports that in the United States, nearly 33 million people suffer from food allergies, with a higher ratio (1 in 13) in children than in adults (1 in 10). Recent advancements in food allergy treatment have reduced the need for elimination tests and epinephrine injections. New therapies include oral immunotherapy and a biologic injection called Xolair.

Our board-certified providers at Asthma and Allergy Associates of Michigan provide expert care for dietary allergy management, including peanut allergies. Managing food and peanut allergies can be challenging, but we offer advanced solutions, including desensitization therapies and emergency action plans, to keep you safe. Our team works with you to understand and test your complete food sensitivity, customize treatment and create individual ongoing allergy plans.

To help diagnose your food allergies, we offer the following services:

  • Food allergy testing

  • Oral challenges to foods and preservatives

  • Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES) evaluation

Our team offers many options for food allergy care, including:

  • Biologic injections (Xolair)

  • Food sensitivity treatment

  • Dietary allergy management

  • Peanut oral immunotherapy (Palforzia)

  • Emergency action plans

  • Specialized peanut allergy treatments

  • Specialized care in Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE)

Xolair is a biologic injection that has been on the market for many years, and until recently was only used for patients with asthma and hives. In February 2024, Xolair was approved by the FDA for use in treating patients with food allergies. Xolair is an injection that is given every 2 or 4 weeks (depending on IgE level and patient’s weight). It can be administered in our office, or at your home.

Many insurance plans cover Xolair, and our team will work to ensure any required prior authorizations are met. The amount of coverage depends on your insurance plan.
