Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE)
Trouble swallowing? We can help.
If you’re experiencing persistent swallowing problems, food getting stuck, chest discomfort, or reflux that isn’t improving with treatment, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) may be the cause. This chronic inflammatory condition affects the esophagus and can significantly impact daily eating and long-term comfort.
At Allergy & Asthma Associates of Michigan, our board-certified Allergy & Immunology physicians diagnose and manage EoE with evidence-based testing and personalized treatment. We help you understand your symptoms, identify possible triggers, and create a long-term plan for relief.
If esophageal symptoms are affecting your daily life, schedule a visit today.
Common Symptoms
EoE symptoms can vary across ages. They often include:
Adults
- Difficulty swallowing
- Food getting stuck in the esophagus
- Persistent heartburn or reflux not responding to medication
- Chest pain unrelated to heart issues
- Unexplained weight loss
Children
- Feeding difficulties or avoiding certain foods
- Poor weight gain or growth
- Vomiting or recurrent abdominal pain
How We Diagnose
Diagnosis begins with understanding your symptoms and evaluating the esophagus directly. We may recommend:
- Medical history and symptom evaluation to review swallowing issues, possible triggers, and relevant family history
- Endoscopy with biopsy to examine the esophagus and confirm eosinophil levels (15 eosinophils per high-power field are required for diagnosis)
- Allergy testing to identify food or environmental allergens that may contribute to inflammation
This approach helps us confirm EoE and determine the most effective treatment plan.
Treatment Options
Treatment for EoE focuses on reducing inflammation, improving swallowing, and addressing potential triggers. Your plan may include:
- Dupixent (dupilumab) — an FDA-approved injectable biologic that reduces inflammation by blocking key immune signals.
- Eohilia — an FDA-approved oral corticosteroid that helps ease swallowing and lower esophageal inflammation.
- Empiric food elimination — removal of common trigger foods such as milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, and seafood.
- Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) — acid-suppressing medications that can reduce inflammation and support healing.
- Environmental allergy treatment — Options such as nasal corticosteroids (Flonase) or nasal antihistamines (Astelin) when allergies contribute to symptoms.
We’ll work with you to build a treatment plan that supports long-term stability and symptom control.
